How to talk to family and friends about Democrats in '06
Sat Aug 12, 2006 at 08:55:35 AM PDT
Is Iraq the only issue for Democrats in 2006? That's the Republican talking point, repeated endlessly.
Let's help change that. Daily Kos has such a wide readership that if even a portion of us accept a broad, coherent vision before the midterm elections, we can CHANGE the conventional wisdom and PERSUADE voters to dump the Republican congress.

Who knew that DSCC stood for, "Democratic Senators' Country Club"?
I invite you to pledge to NOT donate money or time to the DSCC, DCCC or ANY candidate who does not unequivocally state that they will support the winner of the Democratic primary in Connecticut. All the way from senators down to your local candidate for dogcatcher.
Hurricane Andrew - National Guard wasn't federalized
Mon Sep 05, 2005 at 10:20:51 AM PDT
Karl Rove is going to try to lay the blame at Gov. Blanco's doorstep and we have an obligation to seek out the TRUTH.
Background: The response to Hurricane Andrew certainly could have been better, but one aspect that seemed to work well was the ability of the Florida National Guard to perform a law enforcement role. That was not the case when the California National Guard was federalized during the Los Angeles riots. After federalization, the National Guard must adhere to the principle of Posse Comitatus, meaning they must eschew law enforcement activities. In Los Angeles, the National Guard responded to only 20% of requests for assistance, due to their perception of Posse Comitatus. (See below)
Birth of the Gigachurch (and Nancy Pelosi was there)
Sun Jul 17, 2005 at 10:17:49 PM PDT
Today was the opening of the first gigachurch (megachurches are so 1990). Lakewood Chuch held their first service in the Compaq center, former home of the Houston Rockets. Out of curiosity, I watched a re-broadcast of the proceedings. What struck me was how Pastor Joel Osteen preaches a gospel that seems a little materialistic. Okay, a lot materialistic.
The genius of George W. Bush
Sun Apr 10, 2005 at 04:10:04 PM PDT
Bush told reporters aboard Air Force One from Italy that he disagreed with former President Clinton's comment that the pope will have a "mixed legacy." John Paul will have a clear and excellent legacy of peace, compassion and "setting a clear moral tone," he said.
We all know what Clinton meant (was Bill reading DKos last weekend?). But it's just bad politics.
We'll never win until we learn this lesson (re: deficits)
Sat Mar 05, 2005 at 02:04:45 PM PDT
One of the huge screw-ups of the Kerry campaign was that he proposed new spending programs in the face of mounting deficits.
I believe this was a result of the way Democratic strategists use polls to develop details of policies, while Republicans use polls to define broad themes.

The Hagiography of St. George of Crawford
Sun Nov 28, 2004 at 01:09:47 PM PDT
Before a saint is beatified, an informative inquiry is prepared to determine the reputation for sanctity and miracles of the servant of God. Not in a general way, but particular instances of sanctity and miracles must be recorded and are investigated.
In order to smooth the path to beatification, I will aid the postulator-general of the cause by recording specific miracles of the Lord's servant, George W. Bush, and discuss the obstacles to beatification.

James Dobson issues fatwa against Arlen Specter
Sun Nov 07, 2004 at 08:32:38 AM PDT
On This Week with George Steph.
Dobson: "Senator Specter is a big time problem for us and we are really concerned about him. I campaigned against him, I campaigned on behalf of Toomey in Pennsylvania. I thought that the comment that was made by the Senator was one of the most foolish and ill considered comments that a politician has made in a long time. President Bush came to Pennsylvania 30 plus times to campaign for him and the next day after he wins the mandate, wins this enormous victory he goes on the air and sticks his thumb in his eye. That makes no sense at all. Senator Specter is a problem not only because of the judiciary but because he has been the champion of embryonic stem cell research and many other things. He's remembered most for having sabotaged Robert Bork. He is a problem and must be derailed."

The deficit - our wedge issue
Thu Nov 04, 2004 at 04:29:29 AM PDT
We are completely out of power now. However, a coalition with moderate Republicans could give us some legislative muscle. Moderate Republicans are quite concerned about the deficit, as they should be.
We won't gain any momentum on stem cell research, the war in Iraq or gay marriage. But a war on the deficit is the fight we can fight, a fight that we may win, although winning is not as important as the fight.
Will the Democrats in Congress have the guts to declare a war on pork as well? Doubtful. Our 'leaders' are gutless and rudderless. But ideas are like viruses - let's get infected with action-oriented ideas.
The solution is to ENCOURAGE the Republicans
Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 10:22:28 AM PDT
To be as extreme as they want to be.
The first step is to push hard for a balanced budget. Scream it from the hilltops. Align with moderate Republicans who agree that W's spending is out of control. Then Norquist the government to balance the budget. Things must get much worse before they get better.

Consequences of an unjust war
Wed Oct 20, 2004 at 06:12:12 PM PDT
Was the invasion of Iraq was an unjust war? One could claim that bad intelligence from the CIA misled the administration. If you believe it is a just war, maybe you should have known better, but you committed no offense other than incompetence.
Yet even if you make this argument, Paul Wolfowitz admitted the real reason for the war (see below), which you may agree violates point 3 of the doctrine of just war (see below).
Dean's guaranteed unelectability
Sat Nov 29, 2003 at 02:19:34 PM PDT
More than a few of Dean's most ardent supporters were Nader voters in 2000 (see Appendix 1), and Dean himself says that he represents 'the Democratic wing of the Democratic party', a base of Nader support in 2000 (see Appendix 2). But this leads to a question about Dean's electablity in key states in 2004.
