BREAKING: 10,000 National Guard troops called to duty, Bush to speak tonight
Wed Aug 31, 2005 at 02:01:23 PM PDT
From CNN:
BREAKING NEWS 10,000 more National Guard troops are being called up for duties on the Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast, CNN confirms. Details soon.
They said there were enough troops in the area to be able to cope with the recovery effort. It was already obvious that much more help than a few thousand troops would be needed, and this about doubles the number.
Fox News also reports that Bush will address the nation at 5PM Eastern tonight.
On the representation of black men and women in rap
Thu May 12, 2005 at 04:41:49 PM PDT
Who would have thought, a few decades ago, that the thousands of companies responsible for bringing the best of music to Americans would merge into five corporations? Today, these five companies hold a near-monopoly, and no group has been hurt more than the African-American community. Today's mainstream rap glorifies violence and presentes women as sexual objects for the use of men -- a disproportionate sample of the beautiful, intriguing works of art being produced within the wider hip-hop community. The result is that backroom racists are created or furthered when they turn on the radio and television and find black men and women promoting all that they fear.
Tomorrow, a rag-tag team of college students and community activists, with the support of Rev. Al Sharpton, will launch a protest in Santa Monica and begin to change all of that.
Army recruiters using the draft as a scare tactic?
Thu Jul 01, 2004 at 10:05:54 AM PDT
A friend of mine in Massachusetts just got a disturbing phone call from an Army recruiter. He told her that, like it or not, a draft WILL be implemented next June, regardless of the outcome of this election. He implied that there would be no exceptions made for educational reasons and that she wouldn't be exempt because of her sex. He told her that she can expect to serve two years come next June.
He almost got his intended effect: she's conspiracy-theorizing and wondering if he knows something she doesn't, though she's considering a run for Canada as opposed to signing up with the Army. I'm sure other kids, unaware of the fact that Congress has to authorize a draft and hasn't even come close to doing so, have signed up because they were told they'd have to serve anyway.
Is this an isolated incident or is it institutionalized? If any with media connections would like to explore this topic further, I do have the number to the recruitment office that called her, though not the name of the recruitment officer.
Wilson points at Libby, Abrams in Plame fiasco
Thu Apr 29, 2004 at 04:12:26 PM PDT
Via
Kevin Drum: Joe Wilson, husband to CIA operative Valerie Plame and whistleblower on the Bush administration's Iraq WMD claims,
reveals the leakers in his forthcoming book, "The Politics of Truth". He says Lewis "Scooter" Libby, VP Cheney's chief of staff, and Elliot Abrams, who is on the National Security Council, were behind the leaking. He also says Karl Rove is a suspect, but apparantely doesn't have enough evidence to make a stronger claim.
52 former British diplomats bash Blair
Tue Apr 27, 2004 at 02:37:56 AM PDT
In an open letter to Tony Blair,
Fifty-two former British diplomats yesterday delivered a damning critique of Tony Blair's close alliance with George Bush and their "doomed" Middle East policy.
[
The Guardian]
It's got to cut just a little too deep into Blair.
Scalia's reasoning for recent incident with AP reporter
Tue Apr 13, 2004 at 12:46:48 PM PDT
http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/news/updates/5598.html
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia apologized to a Hattiesburg American reporter in a letter received today, and said that he has learned a lesson from the experience.
...
"It has been the policy of the American judiciary not to thrust themselves into the public eye, where they might come to be regarded as politicians seeking public favor," Scalia wrote.
It's great that he apologized, but his justification is off. Whether his speeches are published or not, he's still making them, thus thrusting himself into the 'public eye'.
Maybe he shouldn't be making speeches at all.
Those running the St Petersburg Democratic Club should NOT be in politics!
Tue Apr 13, 2004 at 10:28:15 AM PDT
Courtesy of Drudge:
The following is an ad placed by the St Petersburg Democratic Club in local papers:
"And then there's Rumsfeld who said of Iraq, "We have our good days and our bad days". We should put this S.O.B. up against the wall and say "This is one of our bad days," and pull the trigger."
Then they associate themselves with Kerry's campaign. This is unacceptable.
Russia claims new weapon
Mon Mar 29, 2004 at 04:39:47 PM PDT
MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- Russia has designed a "revolutionary" weapon that would make the prospective U.S. missile defense useless, Russian news agencies reported, quoting a senior Defense Ministry official.
The biggest, strategic disadvantage of a space-based missile defense system (or even of proposing one) is this: whenever you build a weapon, someone is going to try to out-weapon you or try to undermine your weapons. With Star Wars, it could be (or is) as simple as dummy missiles designed to confuse the system and allow the real nuclear weapons to slip through to their targets. The only way to stop the one-upmanship is through international diplomacy and agreements -- imagine if the missile shield were an international effort designed to protect everyone.
But, no, Bush is willing to spend billions on a missile defense system that will be invalidated or ineffective in a couple of years, if it works at all. And I'm sure that when the system is undermined, there will be a 'fix' for it that will mean billions for the aerospace industry and defense contractors.
Now there's a government in power in Russia reminiscent of the Soviets, and a Republican administration on our side of the world. We're looking at the kindlings of a second Cold War. So if Reagan got us out of the first Cold War (ha), then let it be known that Bush dragged us into the second.
Republicans: Seize the Reins!
Tue Mar 16, 2004 at 12:41:57 AM PDT
From Atrios:
H. R. 3920
To allow Congress to reverse the judgments of the United States Supreme Court.
To sum it up: if the bill were to pass the legislative branch and public opinion, the Congress could reverse any decision by the Supreme Court by 2/3rds majority vote in both Houses, given that the decision was made after the passing of this bill.
The bill is sponsored entirely by Republicans, whom I've listed below. They all won their last elections with ease.
This is an issue the blog community can quickly propel to the media spotlight. If everyone posts about this, the media will catch wind and it'll turn from an election-year bill that nobody pays attention to (but is pure gold for TV re-elect commercials in solid-R districts) to another example of Republicans trying to seize power.
Semantics with Matt Drudge
Fri Nov 28, 2003 at 04:45:40 PM PDT
Drudge's original headline for
this story was the one used in the story: "Commanding officer says Clark had no direct role in Waco siege"
Then it was changed to "Officer: Wesley Clark Indirectly Involved in Waco..."
Ah, semantics.
